Creating an End Portal frame in Minecraft is the critical first step to accessing the Ender Dragon and exploring the final dimension. This structure serves as a gateway, and understanding how to build it correctly saves time and resources. The frame must be constructed in the exact pattern with specific orientation to function properly.
Gathering Essential Materials
Before you can construct the frame, you need to acquire the necessary materials. The primary component is End Portal Frames, which cannot be crafted and must be found. These are located within Strongholds scattered underground across the world.
To locate a Stronghold, you will need Eyes of Ender. These items are created by combining Ender Pearls, obtained from killing Endermen, with Blaze Powder, sourced from Blazes in the Nether. By throwing Eyes of Ender into the air, they will float toward the nearest Stronghold, guiding you to the location.
Locating the Stronghold
Once you have located the Stronghold, you will need to navigate through its winding corridors and rooms. Strongholds are typically found deep underground, often requiring significant digging or exploration to reach. Be prepared to face hostile mobs like Cave Spiders and Skeletons during your expedition.
Within the Stronghold, you will find the End Portal room. This room is characterized by a large, square platform surrounded by stairs, with the portal frame already assembled but missing the crucial Eyes of Ender.
Understanding the Frame Structure
The End Portal frame consists of 12 individual blocks arranged in a specific 5x5 square pattern, leaving a 3x3 empty space in the center. Four of these blocks are actually corners, and they must be placed correctly. The frame blocks have a distinct orientation; each one features a small, green eye texture that must face inward toward the center of the portal.
Activating the Portal
Simply placing the frames is not enough to open the gateway. Each of the 12 End Portal Frames must contain an Eye of Ender to activate the structure. Once all 12 eyes are inserted, the portal will immediately activate, turning the empty center into a swirling, purple vortex.
It is important to note that the eyes must be placed when facing the inside of the frame. If the green eyes on the frames are not oriented inward, the portal will fail to activate, regardless of how many eyes are inserted.
Entering the End Dimension
With the portal fully activated, you can now step into the purple portal block to travel to the End. This dimension is home to the Ender Dragon and contains the crucial End Crystals that heal the boss. Be sure to bring weapons, armor, and building blocks to prepare for the final battle.
Traveling through the portal is a one-way trip; exiting the End via the main portal will return you to your original spawn point in the Overworld. This makes preparation essential, as dying in the End results in the loss of your experience and any items dropped in the dimension.
