Spotify has become the default soundtrack for daily life, whether you are commuting, working, or relaxing at home. For many users, the desire to hear a specific track again without navigating to a playlist is a simple but essential need. Finding that option is often the first hurdle, particularly for people who are new to the interface or a recent update changed the location of the controls.
Spotify Desktop: The Primary Repeat Location
On the desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux, the repeat button is positioned in the playback bar at the bottom of the window. This bar remains visible as you browse your library or switch between playlists, ensuring the controls are always within reach. The button is iconographic rather than text-based, so understanding its symbol is key to identifying it quickly.
Look for the curved arrows icon located to the right of the volume slider.
When activated, the button will light up and feature a bright color to indicate that the mode is active.
You will see distinct visuals for repeating one track, repeating the entire playlist, or turning the function off entirely.
Identifying the Active State
Spotify uses color coding and fill levels to differentiate between the three repeat states. A standard, unactivated repeat shows hollow arrows, indicating the function is off. When you press the button, the icon fills in sequentially, providing immediate visual feedback regarding the current setting.
Mobile and Tablet Interface
The layout on mobile devices is streamlined for thumb navigation, which positions the repeat button in a slightly different location than the desktop version. Instead of a permanent bar, the controls appear dynamically on the Now Playing screen to maximize the space available for artwork.

If you enable Shuffle while the repeat function is active for a single track, Spotify will generally prioritize the shuffle randomness over the strict repetition. To maintain a strict loop, ensure that Shuffle is deactivated, leaving only the Repeat icon illuminated.
Troubleshooting Missing Controls
If you are unable to locate the repeat button, the issue is often related to the specific view you are currently in. The playback controls only appear when a track is actively playing. Browsing the library or viewing your collection will not display the repeat icon because there is no audio stream to control.
Additionally, certain third-party devices and smart speakers utilize a simplified remote interface that hides advanced features. In these scenarios, you may need to open the Spotify app on a phone or tablet to access the full range of playback settings, including the repeat function.
