As warm air from inside the fridge is blown over these cold coils, the refrigerant absorbs the heat, causing it to evaporate back into a gas. This is the phase that actively cools the interior, and the cycle begins again as the gas is drawn back into the compressor.

Older units or models with failing compressors often struggle to maintain temperature, causing the motor to run constantly and drive up electricity bills. Modern compressors are designed to operate with higher efficiency ratios, providing better cooling performance while using less power. Factors such as the type of refrigerant used and the precision of the motor control contribute significantly to the overall efficiency rating of the appliance.

Common Signs of Failure

When a compressor begins to fail, specific symptoms often manifest. You might notice the compressor cycling on and off frequently, a complete lack of cooling, or unusually loud noises such as grinding or knocking coming from the appliance. Additionally, if the sides of the refrigerator feel excessively hot to the touch, it could indicate that the compressor is working overtime to compensate for a refrigerant leak or internal damage.
