Collecting a beehive in Minecraft is a rewarding endeavor that brings life to your landscape and provides a steady supply of honey. Unlike other passive mobs, bees are neutral and will only sting you if you provoke them, making them relatively safe to manage with the right approach. The key to success lies in understanding their behavior and using the correct tools to harvest their home without triggering an angry swarm. This guide walks you through every step, from locating the insects to safely transporting the hive back to your base.
Locating Bees and Their Nests
Before you can collect a beehive, you must first find the bees themselves. In Java Edition, bee nests generate naturally in specific biomes, including Plains, Sunflower Plains, Forest, Birch Forest, and Flower Forest. In Bedrock Edition, the list is expanded to include Mangrove Swamps and Cherry Groves. Look for the nest hanging from the underside of a block, typically a tree, during the day between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM. You will see bees flying in and out, and you can identify a nest by the honey particles that visibly leak from its cracks when it contains honey.
Preparing Your Tools and Armor
Approaching a beehive unprepared is a recipe for disaster, so preparation is essential. You will need a few key items to ensure a smooth collection. First, equip a tool enchanted with Silk Touch; this is the only enchantment that allows you to harvest the nest intact. Without it, the hive will drop nothing. Second, prepare armor—preferably with the Protection enchantment—to mitigate stings. Finally, bring a campfire or a handful of lit candles to calm the bees; smoke suppresses their aggression, making the entire process significantly safer.
The Silk Touch Requirement
Silk Touch is a non-negotiable requirement for this task. If you attempt to mine a beehive or bee nest with any other tool, it will break instantly and yield no drops. If you lack the enchantment, you can craft it using a book and three diamonds at an enchanting table, or find it on various treasure loot tables. Remember that Silk Touch only works on the nest itself; when it comes to collecting honey, you will use a glass bottle instead.
Calming the Bees with Smoke
Once you have located a nest and equipped Silk Touch, you must neutralize the defensive instincts of the bees. Right-click a campfire or candle beneath the nest to produce smoke. The smoke particles will rise up and waft over the hive, causing the bees to become docile. They will still leave the nest to investigate flowers, but they will not become hostile toward you as long as the smoke is present. This creates a safe window of opportunity to perform the harvesting action without retaliation.
Harvesting the Hive
With the bees pacified, position yourself directly below the nest to avoid accidentally angering them with your hitbox. Activate your Silk Touch tool and left-click (or use the corresponding action button) on the hive. If done correctly, the block will drop in your hand as an item, ready to be transported. If you break it without Silk Touch, you will hear the sound of breaking wood, but you will receive nothing but a few scattered honeycomb items, which are useless for relocation.
Transporting and Placing
Now that you are holding the precious block, you must move it to your desired location quickly. The bees inside remain dormant as long as the block is held, but they will become active once the hive is placed. To prevent them from taking flight and attacking you mid-journey, ensure you keep the sky or solid blocks above you to prevent rain from waking them.
