Removing a Steam game is a straightforward process, but doing it correctly ensures your system remains clean and your library stays organized. Whether you are freeing up storage space or simply no longer interested in a specific title, Steam provides multiple methods to uninstall software safely. This guide walks you through every step, covering both the standard procedure and troubleshooting tips for tricky situations.
Accessing Your Library
The first step to uninstall any title is navigating to your personal Steam collection. Launch the desktop client on your PC, which automatically logs you into your account if you are already signed in. From here, you will see a dashboard displaying your recent activity and recommendations.
The Library View
Click on the "Library" tab located along the top of the Steam window. This action filters your view to show every game and application you own. By default, the games are arranged alphabetically, but you can switch to grid or list views depending on your preference for browsing your collection.
The Standard Uninstall Process
Once you have located the game you want to remove, the actual uninstallation requires just a few clicks. This method is supported for all titles installed on your primary machine and is the recommended way to handle standard removals.
Right-click on the game’s title in your library list.
Select "Manage" from the context menu that appears.
Click the "Uninstall" option that slides out from the submenu.
Confirmation and Completion
A new window will pop up asking you to confirm the action. Steam will also specify the amount of storage space that will be freed up by this operation. After you click "Uninstall," the client will automatically download and remove the files, displaying a progress bar until the task is fully completed.
Alternative Methods: Using the OS File System
While the in-client method is preferred, there are scenarios where you might need to delete the files manually. This usually happens if the game files are corrupted or if the uninstall button is greyed out due to a configuration issue.
Locating the Folder
To find the files, right-click the game in your library, select "Properties," navigate to the "Local Files" tab, and click "Browse." This action opens the exact folder where the game is stored on your hard drive or SSD. Deleting this folder directly removes the title just as effectively as using the Steam client.
Managing Downloads and Cloud Saves
Uninstalling a game does not automatically delete your saved progress, thanks to Steam Cloud. Unless you manually clear the cloud data, your saves remain stored on Steam’s servers and will download again if you reinstall the title later.
If you wish to keep the saves locally for backup purposes, you can find them in the "steamapps" folder, specifically inside the "common" directory or within the dedicated "userdata" folder. Be cautious when deleting these files, as removing the wrong directory can erase hours of progress if cloud sync is disabled for that specific game.
