Setting a custom ringtone on your iPhone is a simple process that lets you personalize your device with your favorite songs, recordings, or alert tones. Unlike older methods, the latest iOS versions provide a streamlined experience directly within the Settings app and the Music app, minimizing the need for third-party software.
Preparing Your Audio File
Before you can set a custom tone, you need to add the audio file to your iPhone. The most reliable method is to sync the file through your computer using Finder on macOS Catalina and later, or iTunes on Windows and older macOS versions. Alternatively, you can use the Files app on your iPhone to import an audio file from cloud storage or a local source.
Creating the Ringtone
Once the audio is on your device, you need to convert it into the correct format. This is done using the built-in Music app. Follow these steps:
Open the Music app and locate the song or audio clip you want to use.
Tap the three dots next to the track and select "Add to a Playlist" and then "New Playlist."
Edit the song by tapping "Edit" in the Now Playing screen.
Adjust the start and stop times to select the 30-second segment you want as your ringtone.
Converting to AAC
After setting the start and stop points, you need to create an AAC version of the clip. Right-click the song in your library and select "Create AAC Version." This will generate a shortened copy of your selection that is ready to be converted.
File Conversion and Extension
The newly created AAC file must be renamed to use the .m4r extension, which is specific to iPhone ringtones. Right-click the AAC version, select "Show in Finder," and change the file extension from .m4a to .m4r. When prompted to confirm the change, select "Use .m4r" to finalize the conversion.
Syncing to Your Device
With the file properly formatted, connect your iPhone to your computer. In Finder, locate your device and navigate to the "Tones" section in the sidebar. Drag the .m4r file into this area to sync the ringtone to your phone. If you are using an iPhone with iOS 15 or later, you can also use the "Settings" app to download tones purchased from the iTunes Store directly.
Assigning the Ringtone
Once the tone is on your phone, you must assign it to a contact or to the default incoming call setting. Go to Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Ringtone and select your new file from the list. For specific contacts, open the contact card, tap "Edit," and choose the desired tone under "Ringtone."
