Using Apple Pay on your Apple Watch offers a frictionless way to handle everyday purchases. With just a glance and a tap, you can complete transactions securely without reaching for your iPhone. This guide walks you through the exact steps to open Apple Pay on your watch, configure it correctly, and use it with confidence in real-world situations.
Prerequisites for Apple Pay on Apple Watch
Before you can open Apple Pay on your watch, certain conditions need to be met on both your iPhone and the watch itself. Your devices must be running compatible versions of iOS and watchOS, and your iPhone must support Apple Pay. Additionally, you need to be signed in to iCloud with the same Apple ID on both devices and have a stable internet connection during initial setup.
How to Open Apple Pay on Your Apple Watch
To open Apple Pay on your Apple Watch, you primarily interact with the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, since the watch inherits the settings and cards from your iPhone. The process involves verifying your identity, adding cards, and ensuring Wallet & Apple Pay are enabled. Follow these steps to access Apple Pay on your watch.
Step 1: Open the Apple Watch App on iPhone
On your iPhone, locate and open the Apple Watch app. This is the central hub for managing your Apple Watch, including the Wallet settings that control Apple Pay. The app communicates with your watch over Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi to sync changes.
Step 2: Navigate to Wallet & Apple Pay
Inside the Apple Watch app, scroll down and tap Wallet & Apple Pay. This section displays the current cards you have in Wallet and gives you control over which ones appear on your Apple Watch. It also confirms that Apple Pay is active on the device.
Step 3: Verify Your Apple ID and Device
Ensure that the Apple Watch listed in the app is your current device and that your Apple ID is active. If you see multiple devices, select the correct one. You may be prompted to sign in or confirm your identity with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode to proceed.
Step 4: Add or Manage Credit and Debit Cards
Tap Add Card and follow the on-screen instructions to add a new card. You can scan an existing card, enter details manually, or use cards already saved in your iPhone Wallet. During this process, your bank may verify your identity through its app or SMS. Once added, cards automatically appear on your Apple Watch.
How to Physically Use Apple Pay on Apple Watch
After setting up, using Apple Pay on your watch in stores is straightforward. You do not need to open an app; you simply wake the display, select the card, and hold the watch near the payment terminal. The digital crown and side button help you navigate and confirm payments quickly.
Wake the Watch and Swipe Up
Raise your wrist or tap the screen to wake the Apple Watch. Swipe up from the bottom of the display to open Control Center. You will see the Apple Pay icon, which indicates that the feature is ready to use.
Select Card and Tap In Store
Tap the Apple Pay icon to view your added cards. If you have multiple cards, you can scroll to choose the one you want to use. By default, the watch may prompt you with your default card. Tap In Store to prepare for an in-person payment using NFC.
Authenticate and Complete the Payment
Hold the side button firmly until you feel a tap and see a rotating light on the display. Then bring the watch close to the contactless reader. Authentication happens through Force Touch or the side button, and once the transaction completes, you see a checkmark. You can then lower your wrist and proceed.
