Getting the precise coordinates of any location is a fundamental skill for navigating the modern world, whether you are planning a meetup, documenting a travel destination, or verifying a delivery address. Google Maps, the most widely used mapping service globally, provides a straightforward method to extract the latitude and longitude of any point on the planet. This process grants you a unique, immutable address for a location that never changes, unlike a street name that might be renamed.
Understanding Latitude and Longitude
Before diving into the extraction process, it helps to understand the coordinate system itself. Every location on Earth is identified by a pair of numbers: latitude and longitude. Latitude measures how far north or south a point is from the Equator, ranging from 0° at the equator to 90° at the poles. Longitude measures how far east or west a point is from the Prime Meridian, which runs through Greenwich, England, spanning from 0° to 180°.
These coordinates appear in the standard GPS format (Degrees, Minutes, Seconds) or the more modern Decimal Degrees format preferred by digital systems. For most digital uses, including sharing links and programming applications, the Decimal Degrees format is the standard. Google Maps defaults to displaying these numbers in a format that is both human-readable and machine-parsable.
Finding Coordinates on Desktop or Web Browser
The process on a computer is intuitive and requires only a few clicks. You do not need to be signed into a Google account to perform this action, although having an account allows you to save the location to your lists for future reference.
Right-Click Method
The most direct way to find coordinates is to right-click on the exact location on the map. A context menu will appear at the bottom of the screen, and the coordinates will be listed in the top row of that menu.
Open Google Maps in your preferred browser like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox.
Navigate to the specific address, city, or point of interest you are interested in.
Right-click on the exact pin or location on the map where you want the coordinates.
Select “What’s here?” from the dropdown menu that appears.
The coordinates in both Degrees, Minutes, Seconds (DMS) and Decimal Degrees (DD) formats will appear in the search box at the top of the screen.
Dropping a Pin
If the right-click method feels imprecise, you can use the search bar to drop a pin manually.
Type the name of the location into the search bar at the top of the map.
Drag the red pin that appears on the map to fine-tune its placement to the exact spot you need.
Once the pin is where you want it, click on the information box that pops up.
Click the “Share or embed map” link.
A new window will pop up; the coordinates will be displayed in the text box labeled “Link to this map” in Decimal Degrees format.
Finding Coordinates on Mobile Devices
The process on an iPhone or Android device is nearly identical to the desktop method but utilizes touch controls instead of a mouse. This is particularly useful when you are in the field and need to capture the exact location of a landmark or meeting point.
Using the Google Maps App
Most users rely on the dedicated mobile application, which streamlines the workflow significantly.
Launch the Google Maps app on your iOS or Android smartphone.
Long-press on the location where you want to drop the pin. The map will drop a red pin at your finger’s location.
