Understanding Your Location Data

The platform saves two distinct types of location data: your search history and your Timeline. Your Maps search history includes queries for restaurants, gas stations, or addresses you typed into the bar. The Timeline, however, is a comprehensive record of every GPS coordinate your device has recorded, showing where you have been and when. Deleting one clears different trails, so knowing the difference ensures you remove exactly what you intend to erase.
Accessing the Settings Menu
To initiate the deletion process, you must first access the correct menu. Open the Google Maps application on your smartphone or tablet. Look for your profile picture or initial located in the top right corner of the screen. Tapping this icon opens a dropdown menu that houses account settings and privacy controls. Managing Activity Controls

Clearing Maps Search History
Separate from your location Timeline is your search history within the Maps app itself. This is the list that appears when you start typing a destination in the search bar. To clear these specific queries, tap the search field to bring up the recent suggestions. Next to the search bar, you will see an "X" or a "Clear" button that removes the current query. To clear the entire list of past searches, you must go back to Settings, find "Maps history" or "Search history," and select the option to delete all previous searches.
