Keeping your Bissell vacuum clean ensures peak suction and a longer machine life. Dirt, hair, and dust collect inside the canister, under the brush roll, and in the filters, eventually reducing performance. A regular cleaning routine prevents blockages and maintains the airflow that drives effective carpet and hard-floor cleaning.
Safety and Preparation Before You Start
Before cleaning, unplug the power cord and remove the cleaning head from the carpet. For corded models, wrap the cord neatly and set the machine on a stable surface. If you are working with a Bissell cordless unit, detach the battery pack and place it in a safe, dry area. Always wear gloves to protect your hands from dust and any sharp objects lodged in the brush roll.
Empty the Dirt Canister
Locate the dirt canister, usually on the front of the machine, and press the release button to detach it. Hold the canister over a trash bin and press the bottom latch to empty the contents. Use a dry paper towel or a soft brush to knock loose stubborn debris stuck to the inner walls. Rinse the canister with cool water only if the filter is not integrated, and let it air dry completely before reattaching.
Brush Roll Maintenance
Hair and string wrap tightly around the brush roll, choking off suction and causing the motor to work harder. With the cleaner head on a flat surface, use scissors or a seam ripper to cut away tangled hair. Do not cut the hair strands while they are still on the roll; instead, lift them free to avoid damaging the bristles. Check the axles and end caps for cracks and replace the brush roll if the cover is broken.
Cleaning or Replacing Filters
Bissell machines rely on a primary filter and sometimes a secondary HEPA filter to trap fine particles. Locate the filter compartment, usually behind the dirt canister or under the motor housing. Rinse paper filters gently and let them dry for at least 24 hours before inserting them back. Washable foam filters should be squeezed under lukewarm water until the water runs clear, then air-dried fully before use.
Hoses, Attachments, and Small Parts
Detach all wand hoses and extension tubes, then run a broom handle or a long brush through the interior to dislodge compacted debris. Rinse the hose exterior with water and let it dry away from direct heat to prevent the plastic from warping. Wipe down all plastic attachments with a damp cloth, and inspect O-rings for wear or cracks that could reduce suction.
Exterior Care and Final Checks
Wipe the outer shell with a lightly dampened cloth and a mild household cleaner, avoiding abrasive sprays that can scratch the finish. Pay attention to buttons and seams where dust accumulates, and dry the surface immediately to prevent moisture spots. Before storing the machine, confirm that all parts are fully dry and securely attached, and that the cord or battery contacts are free of corrosion.
