A fully charged controller is essential for an immersive VR experience, and knowing how to swap them out safely is a basic skill for any headset owner. This guide walks you through every step, from identifying the correct battery type to reassembling the controller without leaving any scratches.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
Before you begin, gather the specific items required for a clean and safe battery replacement. Having everything ready prevents the frustration of stopping mid-process to find the right screwdriver or buy new batteries at the last minute. Using the correct tools is vital to prevent stripping the small screws or scratching the plastic shell of the controller.
1 x AA battery (NiMH recommended for longevity, or alkaline for immediate use)

Step 1: Power Down and Disconnect
Safety is the first priority when handling internal electronics. You must ensure the controller is completely powered off and disconnected from the headset to prevent accidental short circuits. This step also protects your PC or console from any unexpected input during the disassembly process.
To power down, simply hold the Oculus button located on the side of the controller and select "Shut Down" from the menu that appears. Alternatively, you can remove the controller from the headset and wait for it to enter sleep mode before turning it off manually.
Step 2: Locate and Remove the Battery Cover
The back of the Quest 2 controller features a small rectangular panel secured by a single screw. This panel houses the battery compartment and is usually marked with a small battery icon. Locating this screw is the key to opening the device without causing cosmetic damage.

Step 3: Removing the Old Battery
With the cover removed, you will see the AA battery sitting in a small plastic tray. Observe the orientation of the battery; there is usually a plus (+) symbol indicating which way the positive terminal should face. Noting this ensures the new battery is inserted correctly without confusion.
Use your thumb or the handle of your screwdriver to gently pop the battery out of its clip. If it feels stuck, do not pry aggressively; instead, check if there is a small tab holding it in place and release that tab carefully. Inspect the metal contacts for any dust or corrosion before proceeding.
