At its core, a supercharger is an air pump driven directly by the engine's crankshaft via a belt or gear system. Because it is mechanically linked, it provides instant power the moment the driver demands it, unlike its turbocharged counterpart which relies on exhaust gases that create lag. The speed of the supercharger is directly proportional to engine RPM; as the engine spins faster, the supercharger impeller spins even faster, drawing in ambient air and compressing it before forcing it into the intake manifold.
