Infection often presents with a boil-like lesion that is tender to the touch and may exude fluid. The sensation of something moving beneath the skin is a hallmark sign that distinguishes botfly myiasis from other skin infections. If the larvae are not removed, they can migrate to other tissues, potentially causing more severe complications. While the infestation is rarely fatal, secondary bacterial infections can occur if the site is not properly managed, making timely intervention essential.

Treatment and Removal Strategies

Medical professionals typically handle removal by covering the breathing hole with an occlusive substance like petroleum jelly or nail polish. This method forces the larva to the surface to breathe, allowing it to be extracted with forceps. Attempting to squeeze or dig into the lesion without proper tools is strongly discouraged, as it can rupture the larva and trigger a severe allergic reaction or infection. In some cases, a course of antibiotics is prescribed to prevent secondary bacterial infection during the healing process.

Geographic Distribution and Prevention

The risk of encountering a botfly is concentrated in rural areas of Central and South America, where the habitats of the mosquito vectors overlap with human populations. Travelers to these regions are advised to wear protective clothing and use insect repellent to deter carrier insects.
